The Macedonian NGO CIVIL – Center for Freedom (North Macedonia) and MEDIA DIALOGUE / Youth4Media from North Rhine-Westphalia are organising an international conference entitled ‘Defending Democracy and Human Rights in the Face of War, Nationalism, and Authoritarianism’ on 11 and 12 December 2024 in NRW partner country North Macedonia. The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is supporting this important international conference. The event is part of the NRW Human Rights Week, which includes various formats on the topic. North Macedonia and North Rhine-Westphalia have been partner countries since 2021.

The conference will bring together leading experts, policy makers, civil society representatives and journalists from various European countries and the US to address the current threats to democracy and human rights worldwide. As the free world faces new and intensified challenges to fundamental democratic values, standards and practices – from escalating conflicts and rising nationalism to the rise of authoritarian regimes – this conference will provide an important platform for sharing insights and developing recommendations. The focus will be on the protection of human rights, democratic resilience and media freedom. Panel discussions, workshops and networking formats will take place on both days. NRW European Minister Liminski will open the event day with a video message on 12 December.
